Objective To investigate the effect of treatment for acute close Achilles tendon rupture with bundle to bundle suturing technique. Methods A retrospective analysis was made on 16 cases of acute close Achilles tendon rupture treated by bundle to bundle suturing from July 2012 to December 2014.There were 14 males and 2 females with an age range of 25-42 years (mean,32.5 years). All were victims of sports injury.Mean time from injury to surgery was 2.3 d (range,1-4 d).After operation, the cases started active functional exercise at 2 weeks, partial weight bearing followed by full-weight bearing at 2-6 weeks, ankle joint motion exercise at 2 months, and heel lifts at 10 weeks.Outcome was evaluated using the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot scoring system. Results Mean follow-up was 30 months(range,14-44 months).Wound was sutured in one stage and united in one stage. No infection, skin necrosis, sural nerve injury or deep vein thrombosis occurred. No Achilles tendon re-rupture was seen during follow-up.Time to return to work was 10-14 weeks (mean,12.2 weeks).AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score was (91.5 ± 4.9) points (range,85-100 points) at the final follow-up.Conclusion As to young patients with sports demands, bundle to bundle suturing for acute close Achilles tendon rupture is suitable surgical treatment, which offers early functional exercise, earlier return to work and satisfactory outcome.
